Taking notes is one of the key skills that a mid-stakes online poker player masters, while small-stakes players solely rely on Heads-Up Displays (HUDs) and instinct. If you haven’t been taking notes, especially if you play regulars in heads-up cash games, then it’s definitely time to start. Enter a program called NoteCaddy, which is a companion application for both Holdem Manager and PokerTracker 3. NoteCaddy reads hands directly from your Holdem Manager or PokerTracker database and adds notes based on user-defined criteria.
One of the main reasons you would want to use NoteCaddy is that before your data in your HUD becomes statically reliable (i.e. you have enough hands), your notes will be much more valuable for making reads. For those of you who multi-table, getting a quick read and taking notes on someone can be nearly impossible. If you use an automated process of taking notes, then you can get those early reads that you normally would have missed.
Another great reason to use NoteCaddy is that the definitions it writes can be shared. This becomes very helpful if you move up in stakes and have a friend who already plays at your new level, as they can export their notes and you can use them to your advantage. Be wary that such collusion, however, may be against the Terms and Conditions of online poker sites, so tread wisely.
As of now, NoteCaddy is in public beta phase and completely free. The application itself is a 1.3 MB download and there is a companion 42 MB tutorial that you can also download for free. On the website for NoteCaddy, you can watch a video of the program in use and there’s also a notification system that lets you send in bugs and feature requests.
The program is completely customizable, with tabs for Pre-Flop, Flop, Turn, and River notes; within each are General, Range, and Actions sections. There are a ton of options that you can customize and color-code. The notes appear within Holdem Manager or in Poker Tracker 3 inside the HUD and can be accessed by clicking on the note icon when you are playing at a table.
Both Holdem Manager and Poker Tracker 3 come with free trials and are members of our Recommended Software program. At this time, NoteCaddy is a Windows only program.
